KEYNOTE: The Secrets of Making AI and Generative AI Work: What They Are Not Telling You
Usama Fayyad: Executive Director, Institute for Experiential AI, Northeastern University
While ChatGPT has raised awareness of the general public of the capabilities of Large Language Models as the easy-to-use interface and the chat format made the technology more accessible to larger groups of users. In this talk we will cover the technology at a high level with an emphasis on how the models work to guide us into examples of how the technology fails and what is the appropriate model of using it. We also emphasize some of the less covered items about making LLM’s work: the big dependence on curated and accurately labeled data, the dependence on human intervention (what we call at Northeastern University Experiential AI – meaning AI with the human-in-the-loop). Issues of prompts, so called “prompt engineering” and talent needs are rarely emphasized. We conclude with some coverage of opportunities and areas where the economic, educational, and social consequences of the technology need to be considered. The goal is to separate the hype and buzz from the reality of where the technology can be truly useful as well as a better understanding of the weaknesses and issues.
